Students from BPS learning about waste products.

Last Wednesday Binalong Public School students participated in the ‘Working with Waste’ program offered by the Bournda Environmental Education Centre (BEEC) and Canberra Region Joint Organisation (CBRJO).  The waste education program has now been run successfully in various schools in the Canberra Region.
The program involves a variety of activities that challenge students’ ideas about waste, who is responsible and why they should take action. A waste audit of playground rubbish is conducted and students collect detailed data on the amount and type of waste the school produces.
The results are used as a focus for a brainstorm/discussion session where students began to create an action plan for the school. The students involved in the program become ‘Waste Champions’ for the school and work towards the overall
outcome of reducing waste to landfill.
