Robyn Cooper with Harden Memorial Pool Manager Mell Ings.

Affordable aqua fitness classes are about to commence at the Harden Pool on January 30, Tuesday at 6 pm. This exercise program, which will run every Tuesday and Thursday until the pool closes in the third week in March, is part of the Murrumbidgee Local Health District’s (MLHD) physical activity initiative. The program aims to improve access to safe physical activities and will be a boon for older adults living in our rural community. Murrumburrah resident and Aqua Fitness instructor: Robin Cooper a short time ago attended an aqua exercise leader training weekend in Temora which was sponsored and delivered via the ARI Staying Active program.

The course leader Colleen Wilson-Lord OAM, more than 25 years ago established the first Aqua fitness training course in Australia and won an OAM due to her commitment to healthy exercise. Aqua fitness is a low impact exercise that has a whole range of benefits such as relieving stress and anxiety, increasing muscle strength, building exercise endurance, strengthening immune health and much more says Robin Cooper. “Because aqua fitness classes offer a wide range of joint friendly exercises the body is given a full workout. Also it’s an exercise conducive to hot weather.” “Participants don’t need to be able to swim and everyone can work to their own level of fitness. Like all exercises the results depend on the individuals input, nevertheless aqua fitness can also be lots of fun and is an ideal environment to meet new friends.”

MLDH Health Promotion Officer, Barb Manwaring said, “We recognize the importance of regular physical activity to maintain good health and this is a great opportunity for adults to take part in a local, low cost as well as a fun exercise program.” Both aqua fitness classes will be held at 6 pm (Tuesday and Thursday) at the Harden Swimming Pool. In addition classes also run at the Young Swimming Pool at 10 am on Mondays, and 8 am on Wednesdays and Fridays. Classes run for an hour. Participants are required to pay the pool entry fee plus a $2 gold coin donation. Those interested in joining the classes should bring along a bottle of water as well as sun screen.
