The member for Riverina Michael McCormack, presented the Harden Murrumburrah Men’s Shed with a grant for $2,500 on December 19.
The grant was made available through the federal government’s ‘Stronger Communities program’, which seeks to deliver social benefits in communities across Australia. The program offered a minimum grant of $2,500 and a maximum of $20,000.
According to the Shed’s president, Len Dopson, “The money will be used to repair some pretty damaged flooring, it’s a very old building, it’s become a bit of trip and safety hazard.” Mr McCormack said the program reflected the government’s desire to support local communities, and ensure they’re able to meet the needs of its citizens.
“It’s a good organisation and that’s why the federal government gives money to these sorts of organisations, it builds community capacity,” he said.
Hilltops mayor, Cr Brian Ingram, was also present on Tuesday, and spoke of the importance of these organisations in small communities. “[Men’s sheds] are a great concept and it gives a great opporuntity for people with a bit more time on their hands to do something constructive,” said Mayor Brian Ingram.
The Harden Murrumburrah Men’s Shed has around 30 to 35 members, and plays a vital role in supporting the community as whole, through repair and maintenance work as well fundraising efforts.
