Group 9 hosted Illawarra on Sunday with local lad Joie Whybrow representing Harden and Group 9 in the U14s whilst Boorowa’s Cooper Cross and Will Fahey played for Group 9 Northern in a very narrow loss to Group 7 8-4.
Harden Junior League President Kai Steele said, “It was a good day for the town, with plenty of visitors who were impressed with the ground; some of them hadn’t been here for years. It was good footy all day once the fog cleared. We raised a lot of money for the junior club and we showcased the facilities at McLean Oval and the town.
Joie Whybrow scored a late try in his match (pictured), in the 48-12 loss. Steele said “The boys were beaten a bit early and never recovered. When they looked like making a comeback, Illawarra put a few quick tries together. They never stopped trying. It was a great day for junior league.”
Joie played out of position for his rep side as he normally plays Fullback or Lock and played mostly in the Centres. Late in the second half, he made a nice break though the defence on the half-way line, before being tackled about 15 metres out. The ensuing set of six saw a loose ball which Joie jumped on and scooted over in the corner to post a representative try.
This week’s junior matches are at Boorowa against Young. Steele said, “Our 11s League Tag are leading the way at the top of the table and our 11s boys and 10s boys are also doing well. The club is doing well at the moment.”
