Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll.
A response to the petition sent by a group of Gundagai “elders” to the Queen, seeking her influence in the restoration of the Gundagai Shire Council, has been received. The petition, that made national headlines, was signed by six Gundagai residents, aged 90 and over, and was sent to Buckingham Palace in March. A reply was sent earlier this month to Reverend Bill Wright who organised the petition. Her Majesty, through the Senior Correspondence Officer at Buckingham Palace, Georgina Seage, writes; “The Queen has asked me to thank you for your letter of 29th March regarding the recent merging of Gundagai with neighbouring Cootamundra in New South Wales, Australia. “Perhaps I might explain, however, that this is not a matter in which Her Majesty would intervene. As a constitutional Sovereign, The Queen remains strictly non-political at all times and therefore if you have not already done so you may wish to raise your concerns with your Local Member of Parliament. “Nevertheless, your kind message for Her Majesty on the occasion of the sixty-fifth anniversary of The Queen’s Accession to the Throne was much appreciated.”
