Local horse trainer Mark Cummins, is looking forward to October’s New South Wales Picnic Champion Series Final, with one of his horses assured a place, and another a strong contender. His horse, ‘Sergeant Bilko’ has pulled ahead in the standings for the series, ensuring it will race in the October final, while ‘Living Fire,’ remains a strong contender. “It’d be great to make the final with both of them,” Mark said. Mark, who has spent his entire life around horses, only began training them five years ago, and since then, has got the family involved. His grandchildren love to visit the stables, and feed the horses. Ricky Blewitt, the jockey who rides Mark’s horses, is praised by Mark as being one of the best in the industry, both in terms of his performance and his professionalism. “I’ve never got to chase jockeys, if he can’t be there, he always makes sure someone else is,” Mark said of Ricky. Come October, Mark could very possibly have two horses competing in one of the best races of the season.
