Scott Spackman (far left) after the horse he trains, Black Fusion took out the Leeton Cup over 1600m at Leeton on May 13.
Wagga based horse trainer and former Harden man, Scott Spackman continues to get the best out of his horse Black Fusion, after two consecutive wins recently.
Spackman came away from the Boorowa Picnic Races with a first place for ‘Fusion’ by a winning margin of half a length. The win was a first for the horse under Spackman after running 8 second places in 21 starts.
Black Fusion is a “frustrating and funny old bugger,” Scott says, having proved unlucky at times.
But the win was cause for celebration, and Scott reacted appropriately, carrying on like he’d won a Melbourne cup.
The 7 year old geldingĀ lined up again a week later at Leeton and scraped home by another small margin of just .3 of a length.
Spackman said “It was just a relief to see him win, he always finishes in the mix he just hasn’t been able to string a few wins together, but now he’s had two in a row.”
Fusion looked like he may have been headed for the paddock for a spell, however, his recent form shows that he is relishing the gallops and he will continue on for at least another race or two. The goal is the Picnic Cup final, where $50,000 will be on offer at Orange later this year.
Scott says “The final has been the ultimate goal all along with him.”
Two possible race starts are in front of Black Fusion this week with Canberra on Friday or Wagga on Saturday. The Wagga option looks to be the likely outcome in the 1800 metre Pirtek Wagga Benchmartk 55.
The Murrumbidgee Turf Club have shifted the meeting to the Riverside track on course, and have offered double the usual prize money, after the May 19 meeting was washed out after race 2.
Black Fusion has the impressive record of 55 starts 8-15-2 and is owned by P B Waters, Miss E G Waters, Miss B M Waters, J B Waters & Mrs A Waters. he has now accumulated $123,763.
