Second Rower Danny Arabin (left) doing it tough to catch Jeffrey Brown and Dylan Downey (right). The Brahmans had about 35 bodies for all 3 grades turn out on time for Jason Brown’s first training! All training was fitness only.
he Brahman’s newly appointed Captain/Coach, Jason Brown isn’t letting any grass grow under his feet. The Binalong Brahmans Rugby League Football Club hit the ground running on Tuesday with the mercury hitting a balmy 36.5 degrees. He said “Binalong had a lean year in 2016 and I watched a couple of their games and thought that it wouldn’t take much tweaking to get them higher up the ladder”, With an earlier start to training Brown feels he can add some fitness and endurance to the side for George Tooke Shield this winter.
“Hopefully I will bring my 3 brothers to the club in 2017, Shawn has already signed as my assistant, and he’s a very tough player who never takes a backward step. Timmy is much the same but is a cheeky half-back who will add some spice to games. If Damo can get fit he will be a big asset to the side too” Jason added.
There are 2 further players who previously showed a strong interest in coming to Binalong but as yet have not committed themselves for the Brahmans in 2017. “I felt strongly for Binalong with the tragedy of loss and injury to players so early last season, perhaps this factor influenced the ultimate outcome of their year?” Brown remarked. “Anyway, my ambition is to put the Brahmans back up where they were a couple of years ago” he added.
Some reports incorrectly show that Binalong only won one game in Woodbridge Cup during 2016. For the record, the Brahmans actually won 2 games and had a draw with Burrangong who finished on the bottom of the ladder. Now back in George Tooke Shield for 2017, the Brahmans may find it a bit easier going as Woodbridge Cup is a little tougher competition drawing players from Groups 10 and 11. This brings towns like Orange, Parkes, Cowra and Forbes into the picture, a vast Rugby League community. Nevertheless, George Tooke Shield has grown in stature since the Brahmans left the competition. Clubs like North Canberra Bears have put a lot of starch into this second division group.
Jason concluded by saying: “I would like to take the opportunity to thank Benny Spencer and the Brahman’s management team for giving me the opportunity to coach here this year and I can’t wait to get started”.
President Ben Spencer is pleased to have a new and enthusiastic coach: “Our 2017 season is shaping up well with Tuesday’s and Fridays training at 6:15 pm each afternoon commencing 17 January at the Rec Ground.” Players who have not yet signed but would like to come along are more than welcome. The Club is in negotiations with Milton-Ulladulla for a return visit trial match at Ulladulla and one additional trial match to be announced later. Bos indicus.
