John Gilbert and John Dunn. Gilbert was shot and killed in Binalong over 150 years ago. He was an integral part of the Ben Hall gang.
The new Australian feature film, The Legend of Ben Hall, will be screened on the fairway at the Binalong Community Club (Golf Club) on Saturday, 18 February.
Some locals saw this film when it was screened to a capacity audience at Young’s Southern Cross Cinema late last year. Their response was that Ben Hall was a first rate production in story, photography, characterisation, action, attention to historical detail, costumes and music. The music soundtrack has been nominated for an Oscar.
The Ben Hall story: after two years running from the law, Ben Hall is soon drawn back into bushranging by the reappearance of his old friend, John Gilbert. Reforming the gang and taking on new recruit John Dunn, the trio begin a spree of robberies and crimes across New South Wales. After killing two policemen, they become the most wanted men in the colony.
When the Government declares them outlaws that can be shot on sight, Ben Hall makes desperate plans to flee the colony; with such a large bounty on their heads, treachery abounds where they least expect it.
On 18 February the day will commence at the club at 3:00pm. It will be an afternoon full of entertainment. You can try your luck on a mechanical bull. There will be an open microphone available, along with live music and poetry. There will be barefoot bowls, and a slip & slide for the little kids and the big kids if they’re game.
There will be archery run by world class archers, onsite camping and heaps more.
The film will start at 8:30pm. Make sure you bring your own chair. The cost is $15 per head or $40 for a family. It is $5 per head for campers.
