Friday the 11th of November will mark Remembrance Day around the Commonwealth, as people gather to observe the Armistice that concluded fighting on the Western Front. The Harden/ Murrumburrah RSL will commemorate the anniversary at the Newson Park war memorial. Those who wish to attend are asked to gather there at 10:50am. The Armistice, which effectively ended fighting between the Allies and Germany, was signed in a carriage of the train of Supreme Allied Commander, Ferdinand Foch. It took effect on “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month,” in 1918. Poppies are worn on the day due to the flower’s associated with the poem, “In Flanders Fields.” Their brilliant red colour has become a symbol for the blood that was spilled in the war.
