Beggan Hill Hereford Stud have reasserted their high standing in the Hereford world at the Canberra Show over the weekend. The stud won several major awards including: Reserve Junior Heifer – Beggan Hill Sunflower Senior Champion Female – Beggan Hill Lady Mary. They were then judged against each other with Beggan Hill Lady Mary crowned Grand Champion Female. Beggan Hill Kingdom won the Junior Champion Bull whilst Beggan Hill Kingfisher won Senior Champion Bull. They were then judged against each other with Beggan Hill Kingfisher winning Grand Champion Bull. Beggan Hill Kingfisher was then judged against Beggan Hill Lady Mary, with Kingfisher crowned Supreme Hereford. Andrew Jones of Beggan Hill said, “We won 10 out of 11 ribbons in the Hereford categories, it’s pretty close to the best performance the stud has ever had.” The success is timely as Beggan Hill will descend on the Sydney Royal Easter Show in just over two weeks time to take on the rest of the country. Beggan Hill have now been breeding and showing Hereford cattle for over 50 years. Andrew said, “If Beggan Hill Kingfisher wins Grand Champion, it will be close to 50 years to the date since his predecessor by the same name took out the title.” The recent success of the stud is attributed to a distinguished breeding and showing plan, developed over many years. “It’s about breeding the right animals and matching them appropriately to improve the breed,” said Andrew.

Dunoon 44 was purchased from Dunoon Stud in Holbrook and matched with animals where their characteristics would complement each other. Dunoon 44 sired 3 of the 4 winners on the weekend. Andrew said “We would like to thank Murrumburrah High School for all of their help. Murrumburrah High showed a Heifer which was also Reserve Junior Champion in another breed and Lane Gaudie was awarded first place in parading for the Heifer Beggan Hill Sunflower. With many breeders heading towards Angus cattle in recent years, Andrew explained why Beggan Hill continues to work with Herefords and continue their success. “They have a quiet temperament and overall marketability, we know the breed and the animals and we are doing our best to improve the breed all the time, it’s what we do. Part of winning these awards is to share the improved animals within the industry.” Beggan Hill will be offering buyers the chance to acquire some top cattle during the Royal Easter Show. There will be a silent auction for Beggan Hill Sunflower (winner of two prizes at Canberra) and Beggan Hill Corisande, another Heifer over the competition period. The stud is quietly confident of their chances at Sydney after their recent efforts. Congratulations to Beggan Hill and we look forward to following your success at Sydney.
