Binalong has set the pace in the 2016 edition of the Shine Shield competition, by recording an impressive score of 601 points. The Harden Murrumburrah and District War Memorial Swimming Pool hosted over 200 people on Wednesday night as storms threatened to ruin the evening coming in from the West.

Jugiong is the only other town close to the Binalongians with 563 points. Yass scored 332 and Harden 278.

Handicaps have been applied to the start of the competition

12 year old Thomas Carey of Yass must have had an outboard motor behind him when he recorded an amazing 29.84 seconds in the 50 metre freestyle, breaking the previous record by 1.56 seconds. Set in 1995 by H. Crisp also of Yass the 21 year old record has been obliterated by the 12 year old who only finished primary school last year.

Thomas said ” I’m pretty happy with the swim it’s a new Personal Best for me.” Thomas will attend Daramalan College in Canberra where he will start year 7 this year,  he hopes to train hard and continue his swimming.

In the relay section Jugiong are on 122, Binalong on 88 with Harden in 3rd place and Yass coming in 4th.

Jugiong will host leg the second leg of the Shine Shield on Saturday commencing at 5pm.
