Water and Humus go together at YLAD Living Soils
With the threat of an El Nino in the coming months with Nasa predicting that the El Nino will reach its peak in early 2016 and has the potential to be the most powerful on record.
I don’t want to scare everyone but the only way for farmers to buffer themselves against this event is to build soil humus to hold more water. For every 1% increase in soil carbon levels (with humus being a part of this reading) the soil can hold 160,000 litres of water per rainfall event.
Don’t miss the YLAD Living Soils 13th Annual Field Day on Wednesday October 14 and view soil improvements where Humus Compost and Biological Agriculture have been practiced for 14 years.
Moving to a biological farming system does not mean throwing out everything you do but rather incorporating some products and management changes to enhance the biological activity in the soil.
Recent trials looking at alternative fertilisers have missed the point in that Humus Compost is not a soluble fertiliser but a soil amendment to build long term soil health. Increases in pH and lowering of hydrogen are all positive moves in creating a well-structured soil that can support pasture or crop growth. Despite local authorities making comments that animals don’t need minerals and leaf tissue tests don’t reveal what nutrients are in plants YLAD Living Soils have proven that soil and animal health benefit from nutritious pastures where the minerals are bio-available.
Cameron Rosser, Livestock Sales with Delta Agribusiness commented on both merino wether growth and YLAD Dorset Merino Cross Lamb. The 2013 drop wethers were gaining 2.2 kg per day on pasture and crop and averaged $121.76 after cutting $70 worth of wool, $191.76 per head for 20 month old wethers. Cameron said this is Production Plus.
With over 500,000 hectares under YLAD Living Soils management, Australia wide, do not miss the opportunity to visit Bill and Rhonda Daly’s property Milgadara Young and customers at Kingsvale that in 3 years have turned their property from a hungry soluble fertiliser system to a biologically active system. Expert speakers including Bill and Rhonda, Hugh Lovel, Maarten Stapper, Katerina NG and Amanda Conley will walk you through building healthy living soils and understanding soil dynamics like you have never heard before, assessing crop and pasture health and checking out what insects are beneficial to crop health.
