Many of us find forgotten relics of the past when cleaning out our cupboards or sheds, but for Eric Kuhn, this one was a find and a half. Eric uncovered a copy of the Sydney Morning Herald dated the 26th of February, 1898, when cleaning out a room in his house. “I was cleaning up at the house when I came across it,” said Eric. “I looked at it and saw it had the price of a Penny, and then I looked at the date. I couldn’t believe it.” The newspaper itself is of extraordinary size, with eight columns of information across each page. The contents included fares and ports of call for shipping lines, not unlike airfares in the travel sections of newspapers today. The most striking insight is the following regarding impending Federation, which occurred in 1901, that appears on the front page: “The dream of the good old statesman that passed away two years ago will be realised, and hand in hand and shoulder to shoulder, United Australians will astonish the world.”
