12 second year Medial Students from the Australian National University’s Rural Clinical School have been in town this week for a one week rural placement. The students have been based in Harden and have been given the opportunity to experience rural life and get an understanding of the health problems that persist in such environments. “Whilst in Harden they have had clinical placements at the Kruger Medical Centre, as well as spending time with the Community Services Nurse/Child Health Nurse,” said ANU Rural Clinical School Placement Coordinator, Wendy Hobson.
“The students have also had a tour of the Harden Hospital, have visited Cowra, and will travel to Boorowa on Friday.” On Thursday, the students will conduct a ‘Pit Stop’ with Harden Shire Council workers, taking vital readings such as blood sugar and glucose levels, as well as blood pressure. It will be followed by presentations on skin cancer, a one hour visit to the Southern Cross Care St Lawrence Apartments, and interviews with community volunteers regarding the effects of cancer on their own, their families and their friends’ lives. The day will finish with an informal gathering of younger people at the Light Horse Hotel. “It is a very busy week for the students,” added Wendy.
