Chris Heywood has taken out the Southern District Trainer of the Year title over the weekend.
The former Harden trainer was ecstatic with the win and has put it down to his move to Wagga over two and a half years ago. “We have some great facilities over here and I have expanded my operation from 18 horses to 30. I can’t thank my team of six and my owners enough, I just want to go on to bigger things next year and keeping winning for my owners. We have some very good horses and want more all the time.”
Heywood’s strike rate has been phenomenal. Compared to other trainers he is leaps and bounds ahead. He has a had 229 runners with 28 wins, 28 seconds and 35 thirds giving him a strike rate of one winner every 8.2 starters with a win percentage of 12.2 % and a place percentage of 39.7%.
Son Nick who is an apprentice to him was Runner Up for the SDRA Apprentice title missing out by just one win. Nick spent just over 3 months off the track after a mount reared in the barriers at Goulburn injuring his knee. Heywood showed courage to get back on the horses and narrowly missed out on the title after missing a quarter of his potential rides during the season.
