Alice Zih-Siou Chen and Mina Kuan-Yi Ho (pictured at the Carrington Hotel) have travelled from Taiwan and are “here to pick cherries,” however, several local orchardists are worried that there will not be enough workers to get the job done.
Cherry Growers Association NSW president and local orchardist, Tom Eastlake, said they’re going to need a lot of help, with the crop shaping up to be the best in a number of years.
Mr Eastlake said there were opportunities for locals and people on working visas alike.
Last year’s harvest saw an influx of workers and a crop that did not reach its potential which may have resulted in a low number of workers this year.
Mr Eastlake said “All of the pickers talk, the bush telegraph is very much alive and well.”
Hopefully vacancies can be filled as soon as possible.
