Dr Khalfan (pictured in his East Street surgery) has been a mainstay of medicine in the Harden Murrumburrah district for 38 years. His service to the community as a General Practitioner and his community involvement was recognised when he was announced as a recipient of an Order Of Australia Medal, in the recent Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Dr Khalfan came to town in 1976 and later married local lady Jenny Kildea. They have 5 boys, Aleem, Zaheer, Shahid, Nawaaz and Jamil who range in age from 31 to 20.
Dr Khalfan has been involved in the community since day 1. He was Visiting Medical Officer at the Murrumburrah-Harden District Hospital for 33 years. Dr Khalfan said “In the early years I did everything from obstetrics, surgery and emergency medicine along with general practice.”
Dr Khalfan with the late Robert West were instrumental in setting up the steering committee for the Community Bank and were heavily involved in bringing the Bank to fruition, of which he is still a Director.
He is a patron of Can Assist and was the Chairman of the Life Education Program for this area, which takes in 13 towns from Lake Cargelligo to Cowra.
Dr Khalfan hosts 4 medical students from the Australian National University each year as well as providing instruction and passing on his expertise. He hopes the student will appreciate the advantages of a country practice and may choose a rural area once they are qualified.
He appreciates the fact that he has been embraced and accepted by the community and said “I feel humbled and grateful that the Australian Government has recognised what I’ve been able to do and I’m thankful to the people of Harden who have respected me, I appreciate their loyalty to me and my practice.”
Dr Khalfan went on to say he loves the town and the community and that he is happy he settled in Harden Murrumburrah.
Congratulations on a well deserved reward from your patients and your community.
