The Nationals’ Member for Burrinjuck, Katrina Hodgkinson, has congratulated the residents of Harden-Murrumburrah and Harden Shire Council on the official opening of Neill Street upgrade.
“I recently joined the Harden Shire Council Mayor, Chris Manchester, to inspect the Main Street upgrade shortly before its official opening,” Katrina said. The new garden bed, median strips, tree plantings, flag poles and relocated palm trees have certainly achieved the desired effect of giving the town centre precinct a much-needed facelift.
“I am particularly impressed with the new seating, paving and gardens adjacent to the Mechanics Public Hall Institute, which is one of the town’s iconic buildings.”
Katrina said the overall effect of the improvements that include large tree plantings for shade shelter, strategic lighting of key landmarks, upgraded parks and gardens, better parking arrangements, the enhancement of main street facades, and new sculptures and artwork creates a wonderful image of a community that is welcoming to visitors and open for business.
“For many years I strongly advocated on behalf of Council for State Government financial support,” Katrina said, “including raising the need for this funding in State Parliament in August 2011.
“In January last year I was very pleased to announce that the NSW Government committed to providing $1.6m in financial support.
“An initial payment of $800,000 was made available this financial year and the balance is to be provided in financial year 2014-15.
“I particularly thank the Minister for Roads and Ports, Duncan Gay, whose ear I have bent on many occasions about the need for this funding and who was happy to meet with Council, at my request, to discuss this matter.
“The more pleasant and welcoming environment in the main street will enhance community life and encourage the development of a tourist friendly ‘cafe culture’ allowing residents and visitors alike to simply enjoy the experience of doing business or meeting up with friends in an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere,” Katrina said.
