Samuel Johnson unicycled into Federation Square Melbourne last Thursday breaking all expectations and records in an attempt to unicyle around Australia. What started as a joke in the kitchen turned into a promise that Sam kept.
Sam’s sister Connie has battled cancer 3 times and is dying from the disease. The pair were not sure if Connie would be alive when Sam finished the trip, however they were able to embrace on a stage in front of thousands of people to deafening applause.
Sam set a new world record of 15,955 kilometres in 364 days and raised close to $1.5million in the process, exceeding his target by nearly half a million dollars. Sam came through Harden on 15 October last year, with the community helping him raise $7000 for the Love Your Sister cause.
Connie and husband Michael operated the Book Lore in Albury St with their two boys attending Bunyip Pre School.
At the age of 11 Connie, with the help of early detection and chemotherapy, fought off a very rare and aggressive bone tumour in her leg. At 22, she overcame a tumour in her womb, again with the help of early detection and treatment.
Connie’s third bout of cancer was found in her breast and has spread to other parts of her body.
Samuel is one of Australia’s most recognisable personalities in the country’s entertainment industry and is best known for his roles on The Secret Life of Us, Crackerjack, Underbelly II and Network Ten’s Rush.
Sam and Connies journey over the last 12 months is an inspirational story of love, devotion and sheer determination to succeed.
