The St Vincent de Paul Society Harden Conference has moved to a new location with Zacs Place Community Centre, to provide a warm, accessible and welcoming space for community members who may be in need of support.
President Lola Gay says the move comes at a time when demand for assistance continues to grow.
“We are seeing more people facing complex hardship, with increasing requests for help with medical expenses, medications, fuel, basic pantry supplies, Christmas hampers and emergency accommodation,” she says.
“There has also been a noticeable rise in EAPA electricity assistance applications as households struggle with rising living costs and utility bills.”
Referrals to case workers has also seen a sharp increase as the complexity of people’s circumstances grow, with many people requiring ongoing support rather than one-off assistance.
“Our new premises have been established to ensure that everyone can access support with dignity,” says Lola.
“We offer a friendly non-judgemental chat and a warm cuppa, a well-stocked pantry, practical assistance and a gentle approach for those doing it tough.”
Open for walk-in visits, Lola says visits to the Harden Conference is no-appointment necessary on Tuesday between 10.00am to 12.00pm at Zacs Place Community Centre on Albury Street.
For emergency assistance outside of these hours, Lola urges community members to call 0427 125 108 or the St Vincent de Paul Helpline on 13 18 12.
The opening marks a pivotal point in the Conference’s history as they work towards evolving with the community.
“[We] remain committed to proving compassionate support and practical assistance to those experiencing hardship, ensuring no on has to face difficult times alone,” says Lola.
The Conference is always on the lookout for more volunteers to keep the cogs turning efficiently and Lola encourages interested parties to call at 0427 331 072 for more information.
“If you need assistance, would like to volunteer even just for a couple of hours a month, or are interested in supporting the work of the St Vincent de Paul Society, we encourage you to reach out,” says Lola.
“Whether you are seeking help or looking for ways to give back to your community, our doors are open and we welcome the opportunity to connect with you.”
Working closely with IGA and the community for their winter appeal grocery trolley, Lola says it’s been amazing to see the large amounts of non-perishable items that have been donated to their pantry.
