YASS SHOW – On Saturday 21st of March a team of 19 students and 10 cattle headed over to the Yass Show to compete against students from Braidwood Central School, TRAC, Yass High and Kandos High.
The team took over 4 Beggan Hill stud Hereford heifers and 6 steers/heifers which included our 2 new Fleckvieh steers and the schools own bred Aussie and Wally, speckle park crossbred steers. The Ziems 2 Charolais cross, went over for their last show before being put out to pasture, with Twinkle Toes, the heifer, off to meet the bull.
The Fleckvieh steers surpassed everyone’s’ expectations and behaved like champions for their first ever show after being tied up for a mere 4 times prior. This is a fantastic trait of the breed, being quiet and easy to handle. Wally and Aussie placed 1st and 3rd in the middleweight steer category with XXXX and JD, the Fleckvieh steers placing 3rd and 4th.
Whilst Wally did not go on to take out champion steer, his 13 months of age place him in good stead for the Albury Show in November, where he will compete in the hoof and hook competition.
The Beggan Hill Hereford heifers continue to make great led animals for the students. With all 4 heifers competing in the same class in the interbreed competition, it was Beggan Hill Pearl that placed 2nd in her age category.
The parader competition was hotly contested with MHS students collecting many ribbons.
Standouts for the day went to Jack Drew, Molly Manchester and Pippa Jones who all placed first in their age groups and went on to compete in the final against much older students.
Coming up against young adults in their 20’s is no easy task. Congratulations to these students.
In the Junior Judging, six of the MHS team went on to speak about their placings. Well done to Corinne Howe, Katelyn McMillan, Sophie Kirk, Hannah Guy, Payton Read and Molly Manchester.
