Local breeders Bowness Stud, have capped off a successful outing at the 2026 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, with a mix of strong sales across both Book 1 and Book 2 sessions.
The family-run operation, known for standing Group 1 winner D’Argento, consigned a draft of yearlings that attracted steady interest from domestic and international buyers, reflecting the stud’s focus on producing race-ready athletes.
The sale, held from January 11-15 at the Magic Millions complex on the Gold Coast, saw overall gross turnover exceed $212 million for Books 1 and 2 combined, with an impressive clearance rate of over 84% in Book 2.
For Bowness Stud, the event highlighted the market appeal of their homebreds and progeny by sires like D’Argento, Best of Bordeaux, and others, with a particular emphasis on precocious types suited to Australia’s competitive racing scene, their yearlings performed well with a mix of talent from well bred mares or mares with a history of strong performances on the track.
In Book 1, Bowness offered several standout lots, achieving notable prices amid a selective but buoyant market.
Among the highlights:
• Lot 470: A grey colt by D’Argento (AUS) out of Lift All Boats (AUS), a daughter of More Than Ready. Sold for $80,000 to Jiandao Zhang. This athletic yearling boasts a pedigree blending speed and stamina, with the dam a half-sister to stakes performers.
• Lot 474: A colt by D’Argento (AUS) out of Trust Her (AUS). Fetched $50,000. The breeding combines D’Argento’s proven Group 1 class with a dam from a family known for producing durable runners.
• Lot 487: A colt by Zoustar (AUS) out of Street of Dreams (AUS). Commanded $300,000, one of the higher prices for Bowness in Book 1. This lot’s sire is a leading Australian stallion, and the dam traces to a black-type family.
• Lot 644: A colt by D’Argento (AUS) out of All Too Soon (AUS). Sold for $80,000. The pedigree features All Too Hard influences, with the dam a stakes-placed mare.
• Lot 694: A colt by Diatonic (JPN) out of Via Rosa (AUS). Achieved $200,000, going to Yulong Investments. This Japanese-sired yearling offers international flair, with the dam a winner from a speedy lineage.
Additional Book 1 lots included the Zousain (AUS) filly (Lot 869) out of Duchess of Buor (AUS), the Artorius (AUS) colt (Lot 922) out of an unnamed dam, the D’Argento (AUS) colt (Lot 924), and the Diatonic (JPN) colt (Lot 951), though specific sale details for these were highlighted in the stud’s post-sale recap as part of a family-focused effort.
Moving to Book 2 on January 15, Bowness was a prominent vendor, selling 14 lots for a gross of $693,000 at an average of $49,500 and a top price of $150,000. This represented a solid return in a session that saw the over-all Book 2 average rise to $51,466, up from the previous year.

• Lot 983: A chestnut colt by Best of Bordeaux (AUS) out of Zero Tolerance (AUS). Sold for $45,000 to Amanda Turner Racing (NSW). Best of Bordeaux brings sprinting prowess, with the dam a winner over short distances.
• Lot 999: A bay filly by Best of Bordeaux (AUS) out of Assertin Mischief (AUS). Went for $35,000 to Kemp Racing (QLD). The breeding emphasises early maturity, ideal for 2YO races.
• Lot 1000: A bay colt by Best of Bordeaux (AUS) out of Asteroidea (AUS). Secured $40,000 from Eric Yeung/Keith Low Racing (Hong Kong). This international sale underscores the global demand for Australian-bred speed.
• Lot 1037: A bay filly by Best of Bordeaux (AUS) out of Duchess Marizza (AUS). Sold for $33,000 to Conners Racing (NSW). From a family with black-type potential.
• Lot 1163: A colt by D’Argento (AUS) out of Sadler’s Wish (AUS). Topped Bowness’s Book 2 at $150,000, purchased by Wenguang Niu (China). The dam is a stakes performer, adding depth to this Group 1-sired yearling’s pedigree. The performance aligns with Bowness’s philosophy of “breeding for the racetrack,” as stated in their online profile.
With D’Argento progeny featuring prominently, the stud continues to build on the stallion’s reputation as a source of tough, competitive horses. Overall, Bowness’s results contributed to the sale’s positive feel, with Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch praising the event’s success: “The numbers were great… it’s turned out a good format – it was really solid and ends the sale well.”
