Pigeons were sighted Wednesday morning dead on CBD rooftops and Bird dropping on the pavement in the CBD.
Council is currently investigating an increase in bird deaths within the Harden CBD and surrounding areas. The matter has been reported to the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), who are providing support and assistance with the investigation.
If you see any dead birds on or around your property, please dispose of them as soon as possible in a safe and hygienic manner. Disposable gloves should be worn, and dead birds should be wrapped securely in a double plastic bag or plastic wrapping before placing in your household waste bin. Wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Please also be extra vigilant to ensure your pets do not eat any dead birds.
There have also been other flying animals in the main street. Bats are making a home in the palm trees located in the Harden CBD.
An Australian man in his 50s has tragically died from Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV), several months after a bat bite. This marks NSW’s first and Australia’s fourth ABLV fatality since 1996. The rare, rabies-like virus can lie dormant for years, and once symptoms appear, there’s no cure.
Health authorities urge avoiding all bats, as any bat can carry ABLV.
It’s now a matter for the Council and other agencies.
