Murrumburrah Public School Silent Auction Closes With Incredible Success

Painting by Sue Leitner was on offer at the Silent Auction.

The Murrumburrah Public School Silent Auction closed on May 25 which is being reported as a fantastic success for the school. Lily Corkhill of MPS is incredibly grateful, giving their thanks to the generous individuals and businesses who donated.

“Our year six cohort at Murrumburrah Public School organised an auction this year where we reached out to the Year 6 families first to see if anyone would be interested in making donations. We reached out to different businesses in the area. Myself and the other Year 6 teacher from Young were able to contact a few businesses in Young, but then we obviously also wanted to recognise businesses in Harden as well,” she said.

“We had a good combination of different things. Lots of people donated artworks, which was really fantastic. We had a camping set, we had different vouchers, we had hampers, all sorts of different things, which was really exciting.

“We had such a fantastic amount of donations, which was so exciting.

“We collected all of those items and had the auction set up on Facebook and people were just able to make bids during the week. We had it displayed at our autumn night markets, which we hold each year at Murrumburrah Public School and people were able to make bids on the night.

“On Sunday, we checked the highest bidder and they were able to come and collect their items from school over the last couple of weeks.

“The whole autumn night markets works alongside our operation art program, which we run at school. It’s a department initiative with Westmead Children’s Hospital. Students create the artworks and they are displayed at the night markets.

“On the night we had that, each class had a market selling different products like handmade products or activities, face painting or just different marketing style stuff, and then our auction as well, which was really exciting.

“All of that combined, we were able to make a donation to the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation, a $1,500 donation, and then the rest of the money will go back into the school.

“The auction itself actually raised close to $2,000, but we just worked out a percentage of what we made, and then we split it between making a donation and then putting some back into the school as well as to cover all the costs of students and teachers making all the items at the markets.

“We had different community members donate paintings. I think it was five or six different artworks, which ranged from like acrylic on canvas. We had textured canvases, we had digital prints, we had collages. We had lots of artworks.

“We had a sculpture as well, which was really amazing. We had vouchers to different local businesses, like the Thai restaurant, the IGA, the Australian Hotel in Young, and the Cinema in Young. We had a camping set that was kindly donated by Bunnings. It had two chairs, an umbrella, an esky, a table, just little bits and pieces.

“We’re so excited that we were able to make a donation to the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation. That covers not just Westmead, but the Children’s Hospital in Randwick and lots of different initiatives that they put out as well for families that have children that are unwell.

“We were so impressed with the turnout, both at the autumn night markets on the Wednesday night, but also with the online auction.”

Lily commented that advertising the night markets has resulted in a stark increase in attendees.
