The 2025 Harden Polocrosse Carnival will be held in Jugiong as opposed to the Harden Racecourse due to Bunyip Preschool using the premises after flood damage rendered typical operations impossible for the school. Instead the 14 and 15 June date for the Carnival will mark the first for Jugiong Showgrounds hosting the event. It will be $40 for adults, $15 for juniors and $10 for sub juniors. Cash only.
Paul O’Connor of the Harden Polocrosse said that it was a decision that had to be made to hold it in Jugiong because of the importance of regional education.
“Because of the hail storm, their building got damaged, they needed somewhere to go. We were able to come up with a plan there that that’s got them out of trouble be-cause their other building won’t be finished in time,” he said.
“Jugiong have been kind enough to work with us and are going to let us run the tournament down there, which is the 70th anniversary, so the club was pretty keen to mark the occasion.
“Thanks to the cooperation from the community, the Jugiong Club and the Trust there that run all that, they were able to help us out, which is good.
“It means a lot and no surprise that they were happy to do it because it’s a good thing that the user group for the Racecourse have been able to help out Bunyip, because that would have affected a lot of people and they didn’t have somewhere for the preschool to go. That’s a no brainer and then it’s much appreciated by us that Jugiong have been able to help us out there.
“It’s very typical of the area we live in how everyone gets in and gives a bit of a hand. We might have not worried about running the tournament, but because it’s the 70th anniversary, people in the club were all pretty keen to mark the occasion.
“It’s a lot more mucking around to have to go and run it at someone else’s venue with all the convenience of normally running it on your home turf and all that sort of thing, but that is what it is and we’re all geared up to go weather permitting.
“It’s a pretty good milestone for a little club that’s just been poking along for a lot of years to keep it going.
“I’ve been involved for about 36 years and there’s a lot of people there before me. It’s had its ups and downs, but it has been poking along now for quite a long time. A lot of people have contributed to that from within the immediate area and we actually have members who play with us, who are from as far away as Canowindra through contacts going back over the years through Harden and things like that.
“We’ve got a lot of good families involved, which you need to be able to run a club like that and to put on this sort of event, it’s a big effort from all the members to put on the meal on the Saturday night and cook up a bit of roast pork and roast lamb, the usual thing and put on a bit of a celebra-tion. It’s a good team effort from everyone to be able to do that and to run the carnival, which is a pretty big couple of days. A lot of work goes in, with the canteen and everything.
“The canteen this year is being run by Jugiong Public School to raise a little bit of money for their show because they normally run it for the camp draft down there, but because the campdraft musn’t have gone ahead for whatever reason. Jackie Lenehan is taking the job on on behalf of the Jugiong Public School to raise a few funds there. That’s nice to see that opportunity and we’re more than happy to do that because, it’s a good thing for them to be able to do.”
