On Friday, May 2, 2025, the Light Horse Hotel will play host to a special event where three local men will brave the clippers to raise funds for a cause that hits close to home for many in the community. Gus Shea, Jacob Prosser, and Lucas Fitzsimmons will shave their heads in support of Can Assist, an organisation dedicated to helping people in rural and regional areas who are fighting cancer.
Kicking off at 7pm the night will feature entertainment from Nathan ‘Whippy’ Gribbs with his whip cracking performance and live music by Tommy Butt, ensuring an evening full of excitement for all who attend.
But it’s the head-shaving challenge that is set to steal the spotlight, as the trio aims to raise as much money as possible for Can Assist Harden.

Lucas Fitzsimmons, who has lived in the area for just over a year, said he decided to get involved after seeing the fundraiser online. “I just saw it online, and after asking a few people, it seemed like a good cause,” Lucas explained. “I run my own pressure washing business and I’m donating 25% of my earnings this month leading up to the event, and I’ll throw in a little extra, on top of what others donate.”
For Lucas, this cause is personal. In January, just days after his own birthday, a close friend of his passed away after a battle with stage 4 bowel cancer. His friend had gone into remission, but unfortunately, the cancer returned. It hit me hard,” Lucas said. “I’m happy to give back to the community and do what I can.”
Gus Shea, another local participating in the event, echoed Lucas’s sentiment. “We want to raise as much as we can,” Gus said, noting that he had been touched by the impact cancer has had on people in the town, including the loss of his own grandmother to the disease just last year.

“There are a lot of people in the community who’ve been affected by cancer, and Can Assist does a great job helping those in need.”
Having a mullet for eight years and going three months without a haircut, Gus is ready to part with his signature look. “I’m doing my little part,” he said. “I’ll shave it all off, and hopefully we can raise a good amount of money for them.”
“I’ve known Jacob for years, and we went to Murrumburrah High School together,” Gus said. “Being a local, you kind of know everyone, and I’ve played rugby union with Jacob in the town. It’s important to come together for causes like this.”
The event promises to be a night of fun, camaraderie, and giving back. Everyone is encouraged to come down to the Light Horse Hotel, show their support, and contribute whatever they can to help Can Assist. Whether it’s through donations or just coming to cheer on the three men as they shave their heads, every little bit helps.
With a community spirit that’s truly heartwarming, the fundraiser is not just about raising money but also about honouring those who have fought against cancer and remembering those who have lost their battle. So, mark your calendars and join Gus, Jacob, and Lucas for a memorable evening of fun, entertainment, and most importantly, making a difference for those in need.
