Michael ‘Changa’ Shea with daughter Bec Shea after Cantbuybetter stormed home to win the Listed Brisbane Handicap on Saturday.

Michael, Judy and Bec Shea have continued to reap the rewards of a spectacular 2017, with their horse, Cantbuybetter, winning the Listed Brisbane Handicap. The horse went into the race, which is held at Doomben Racecourse in Brisbane, paying $6.00, with a trio of unlucky races behind him. But the fourth time would prove a charm, with Cantbuybetter claiming victory by a head, in front of Hopfgarten and Zahspeed. Ridden by South Australian jockey, Jamie Kah, Saturday’s race, is the latest win for Cantbuybetter, who took first place at the Singapore Turf Club Member’s Handicap in May, also held at Doomben.

The horse’s trainer, Ben Currie, had originally planned to send him over to Perth for the Railway Stakes, but fortunately decided to keep him on the east coast for the summer feature races. Michael and Bec travelled to Queensland to watch the race, and are ecstatic with the result, and were particularly impressed with Jamie. “She’s a good rider, great rider, one of the best in Australia,” Michael said of Jamie. The horse will take a short spell, before taking to the track again on the 30th of this month, once again at Doomben, with Jamie Kah returning from South Australia to ride Cantbuybetter.
