The Harden Picnic Races are just around the corner with the October 28 date coinciding with Cox Plate day.

The champion mare Winx will searching for her third successive win, galloping around the Moonee Valley circuit, the same time as the finest thoroughbreds in the region hit the Harden racecourse.

The winner of the 2017 Cox Plate will run approximately 2mins 5sec for the 2040m. Better Loosen Up (1990) holds the race record of 2.01.5.

The 6 race card at Harden will feature 2 maiden races over 1000 and 1400 metres and two class B handicaps over 1100 and 1400 meters. The trophy handicap over 1100 metres will be hotly contested as will be the Harden Picnic Cup over 1400 metres. The winner of the cup will take home $5,440 from the $8000 in total prize money.

The track is in glorious condition with Club President Nathan Schofield mowing the grass twice in the last 2 weeks. “It was pretty thick and hard to get through again, it’s coming along nicely, we just need a drop of rain.”

The committee are putting together a permanent coolroom in the bar area which will keep the beveridges chilled and will be used by all user groups in the future. The races are being supported by their usual loyal sponsors, however, the committee is happy to partner with any business who would like to work with Harden-Murrumburrah’s biggest social event on the calendar.

The races are a great family day out. There are still tent sites available, however, race goers will have to get in quickly to secure their spots. Contact Nathan on 0400 355 142.
