Matt Peisley holding the South West District Golf Club Pennant Shield on the 18th green at the Harden Country Club.

For the 2nd time in 38 years, the Harden Country Club has prevailed and confirmed they are a weapon in South West District Golf Interclub Pennants. Harden’s Handicap-Division Pennant Team has been a feature of the Club almost since its inception, with sadly the Scratch Division Team going by the wayside in recent years. Maybe it’s our hard fought handicap matchplay Dempster Cup within our Club, maybe it’s just a bevy of steady handicap golfers. Who knows, but it’s starting to pay off in spades.

Our squad for this season has seen 8 solid contributors to this 8 man format where if one man was out for family or other important reasons, another has stepped into the breach admirably. An allround team effort has meant that any combination of the 5 out of the 8 would have held form over this campaign. Winning 3 out of the 4 round games, our team has presented in the final well into first place despite the bottleneck for second and the right to play Harden in the final.

That team this year was the seasoned campaigners from Cootamundra. From our squad of Craig Filmer (c), Peter Steinke, Tam Kennedy, Ron Page, Rick Preston, Jamie Cantrill, Brian Tredinnick and John Brownhill, the finals team ended up being Matt Peisley (c), Peter Steinke, Tam Kennedy, Brian Tredinnick and John Brownhill. This team represented the broadest range of handicaps on offer against a Cootamundra team that are tight 10 – 15 handicappers. Our boys won the final conducted at Young last Sunday by 4 matches to 1, mirroring our round game against Cootamundra earlier in the season which was the same result. Matt Peisley has brought home a 6/5 victory, Peter Steinke 2/1, Brian Tredinnick took his 3/2 and John Brownhill fought from 4 down to get home 1 up at the 18th.

Tam missed out but was still grinning like a rat with a gold tooth at the result. Photos and shirts will be arranged for the team and the Team Captains are working on Pennant Plaques for the Clubhouse. When you see one of the team, say congratulations for doing our little Club proud. I think we have the depth of match players in our Club to again field 2 teams next year. Watch this space.
