The Young Yabbies Rugby Club will host the inaugural Harden “Super Sevens” Rugby Tournament to be held on March 8 at Roberts Park, Harden. Teams from Young, Harden, Grenfell, Boorowa and an invitational side will fill out a small but active pre-season round robin schedule aimed at giving the district’s rugby communities a good hit-out before the 2014 season commences.

The Yabbies have decided to host the sevens rugby in Harden because of the close and long relationship between the two teams, the excellent playing facilities and the wealth of rugby players past and present located at Harden.

And for the wider Harden-Murrumburrah community, it’s a reminder that there is still a strong rugby following in the town towns after the club has been unable to field a side in the Monaro competition sine 2010.

The initiative is the brainchild of Yabbies joint first grade coach Aaron Seaman who saw an opportunity to share the newfound energy at the Young club as it rebuilds, following one of its toughest seasons on record.

“The Yabbies have started off flying in 2014 with the new look committee, coaching staff and a great turn up early to training with 30-plus players each Tuesday and Thursday,” Seaman said. “We thought this was a great opportunity to share this enthusiasm around the district and help other clubs grow stronger”.

The rejuvenated Yabbies committee too no time in getting behind the idea of a district sevens tournament, seeing it as a chance to promote its values of inclusion and enjoyment beyond the boundaries of Young.

“Rugby has always been a community-focused sport and we are really happy to be hosting this event at Harden,” Yabbies club president Ben Reid said. “When rugby is strong in those towns it will be strong in Young too.”

There will be a BBQ and bar amenities on the day for players and spectators and the club invites all those interested to come and enjoy the excitement of the running rugby.

Sevens rugby is a fast and entertaining version of rugby where teams of seven players a side compete in two 7-minute halves. While the games are much shorter than the 80-minute 15-a-side version, the extra space for running and lack of stoppages ensures it is as physically demanding workout for players.

“This will be very good pre-season training and will improve fitness, ball skills and teamwork as we move closer to the season.” Seaman said.

There is still space available for a few more teams so if you think you ‘d like some fun and fitness call Aaron Seaman on 0488 915 315 to discuss playing or nominating your own team for the tournament.
